The Superpower Institute is pleased to announce the appointment of Joanna Kay as Program Director, International Strategy, Partnerships and Engagement. Joanna brings deep expertise in global trade, renewable energy and economic diplomacy, and will lead the Institute’s international program – strengthening partnerships with key trade allies and driving investment in clean energy and green industrial exports.
With over a decade of experience across the public and private sectors in the Indo-Pacific, and a leadership role at the Smart Energy Council, Joanna has played a key role in shaping energy policy, advancing international trade agreements and securing major investments in renewable hydrogen and clean exports. She was recognised in The Australian’s 2024 list of “100 Green Power Players” as a trusted voice on climate-aligned trade and decarbonisation.

Joanna's focus will be on positioning Australia as a clean energy superpower by strengthening partnerships with key trade allies and driving investment in renewable energy and green industrial exports. She will lead in-country engagement and work closely with governments, industry leaders and non profits to accelerate Australia’s role in the global net zero economy.
TSI CEO Baethan Mullen said: “We’re thrilled to welcome Joanna,” said. “She brings a wealth of knowledge to a critical part of our mission. Australia has what the world needs in the net-zero transition – Joanna will help us build the international relationships that turn that potential into real-world impact.”
Commenting on her appointment, Joanna Kay said: “The global transition to net zero is Australia’s greatest economic opportunity. With world-class renewable resources and the ability to produce energy-intensive products at scale, we are in a prime position to lead the world in green exports.
I’m excited to join TSI to help shape Australia’s international strategy and build the partnerships needed to realise that ambition.” Joanna will commence in the role from 1 April, 2025.
