The Superpower Institute welcomes the commitment by the reelected Cook government to make Western Australia a renewable energy powerhouse and a leader in green iron and steel processing.

“The green iron and steel opportunity for Australia is enormous. Our analysis shows it could generate up to $400 billion in export income,” said Chair of The Superpower Institute Rod Sims.

“As the world’s largest iron ore producer with vast low cost renewable energy potential, WA is perfectly positioned to develop a new thriving green iron industry.”

The Cook government’s Green Iron and Steel Action Plan will focus on streamlined approvals, building enabling infrastructure and driving collaborative research to support green and low emissions downstream processing of WA iron ore.

“We welcome this bold commitment. WA has long been a global energy leader, supplying the world with fossil fuel gas. Now it can also lead the way in providing zero carbon commodities like green iron,” Mr Sims said.

“Premier Cook is following in the great Western Australian tradition of taking full advantage of the State’s amazing natural resources, such as some of the world’s best solar and wind resources.

“The Superpower Institute looks forward to sharing its research and policy advice with the WA government. Our shared ambition is to see new green iron investments and production in the next few years,” said Mr Sims.
